What is PhoneGap?

PhoneGap, also known as Apache Cordova, is an open-source development tool for authoring mobile apps in HTML5 and JavaScript.  The apps you create can access mobile device features, and can be distributed as packages for multiple mobile platforms in popular app stores.  For more information, visit the PhoneGap website.

What is the Dolphin PhoneGap Add-on?

The PhoneGap Add-on for Dolphin browser implements the PhoneGap API in the award-winning Dolphin browser.  It enables web applications to access mobile device features such as accelerometer, camera, and microphone.  This web-based architecture for mobile platforms opens new distribution channels and new possibilities for interactive web apps that go far beyond the desktop experience.

What version of PhoneGap is supported in the PhoneGap Add-on?

The Add-on implements PhoneGap v1.7, with several security-related API’s removed to protect private user data.  See the PhoneGap Add-on API guide for more details.

How do I get started?

You can build a new web app from scratch, or start with an existing web app.  Converting a conventional PhoneGap native app to a PhoneGap-enabled web app is surprisingly simple, and may only involve changing one line of code.  The PhoneGap Add-on and complete developer documentation are available at the Dolphin developer website.

Why will people use the Dolphin PhoneGap Add-on?

Because it will change their world.  With the PhoneGap Add-on and the elegant, industry-leading Dolphin browser, users will have a bold new web experience that incorporates GPS, compass, and accelerometer, audio/video capture and playback, tactile feedback, and more.

Will my web app work with other browsers?

For a web app to use features of the PhoneGap Add-on, the user’s browser must be running the Add-on. (Your app can query to see whether the Add-on is running and adapt accordingly.) Currently,. the only browser that supports the PhoneGap Add-on is Dolphin Browser HD for Android version 8.5 and above.

What’s planned for the Dolphin PhoneGap Add-on in the future?

As PhoneGap evolves we will upgrade the Dolphin PhoneGap Add-on to support the latest API’s.  In addition, we will continue to innovate and empower developers to create outstanding, leading-edge web apps.

Can I access user’s private information from the device?

No.  We take the privacy of user data very seriously.  We thoroughly reviewed the PhoneGap API and made the changes necessary to ensure that no user’s private information can be accessed from the web app.  For more information, consult our PhoneGap Add-on documentation.

How about a Dolphin PhoneGap Add-on for iOS?

For now, there is no Dolphin PhoneGap Add-on for iOS.
